The Reality of Self Image

The Reality of Self Image

The reality of self image has been scrutinized by psychologists and philosophers alike for centuries. People like Carl Jung, Sigmund Freud, Milton Erickson, and even Buddha have all chimed in over the centuries about their ideas of the truth of self image and where or how it is created. They all had their own unique beliefs about what self image truly is, and how it is formed throughout a lifetime. There are many arguments as to what self image is exactly. People will agree that self image has much to do with how a person feels about him/herself. New-Age thoughts are that your beliefs and mental images of the self in your minds subconscious dictate your reality. So with this in mind, some would say that self image means how a person views himself in the world, and  in turn will be the life you live until you cognitively or subconsciously change this belief program.

What you do everyday – your job, how you treat others, how attractive you are to others – hinges on your self image. Some people have positive perceptions of themselves, while others do not. It is believed that people who have positive perceptions of themselves have been told they are good, or useful in life by their family of origin. The opposite is people who are constantly told or think they aren’t good enough or useful by family or friends. Having a negative perception of oneself is what we refer to in Neuro-Linguistic Programing (N.L.P.) as your map of your mind or your program of belief pattern. After all, a wise person knows there are many different routes you can take to get to the same amazing destination using a map.

These negative perception patterns are not useful and is often not true. You see there are three things the mind has been proven to do, time and time again without fail. The mind will automatically distort, delete and generalize all information you receive through your five senses every second of the day. Have you ever heard the term “Your Perception is skewed.” or “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” This is because your idea of the world, reality, beliefs and truth will always be completely unique to you. What someone else finds to be a compliment, another may take as put down. What you see, hear and feel is easily distorted by the mind. Small and large things can be completely deleted. Generalizations of thoughts are formed about people and places just off of thoughts previously felt in the past as a true belief. This is the reason eyewitness testimony is often identified as unreliable. This is also the reason hypnotherapy can assist you with rapid positive correction of self image, as the subconscious mind speaks primarily in images, and will assume the new belief program quickly and easily. A new map of the mind for you to follow towards a positive self esteem and self image. The subconscious does not know the difference between reality and fiction. This is why scary movies seem so real to our nervous system and cause such anxiety for some people. It is also the reason you can change your self image and self esteem powerfully and positively with hypnotherapy so effortlessly through perceived images and new belief programs. In essence and new mental mind mapping.

This leads to another definition of self image which is how others view a person. If others  perceive a person’s company as unfriendly, unlikable or fake the person may develop a poor self image. They may not be aware they are putting off these types of vibes to others. They may need coaching to gain enlightened insight and better social skills. If other people do not find a person attractive, the person may suffer from poor self image, low self-esteem and begin to lack confidence in social situations. Often resulting in anxiety, antisocial behavior patterns, and introversion.  People often put too much emphasis on what others think about them physically and mentally. In reality it is not truly important to know what another person’s thoughts are about yourself. There is nothing you can do to change the first impression typically. So I pose this question to you.

“Why waste precious emotional energy and mind space with the possibility of self harm, as you are now reverting to damaging your positive self image with the imagined idea that you are not good enough for someone else in their mind?  Does this really help you or hurt your self image after all?”

Please remember that your self image will change throughout your lifetime. You will begin to rely less on what others think about you as you will mature and find hobbies and social groups that accept you for who you truly are in mind, body and spirit. Your perception will change as you grow and become more educated through experiences in life. Learning a skill or learning more about the world can have a positive impact on your self esteem.

Sometimes, though an individual may need guidance counseling, spiritual life coaching, or hypnotherapy in order to develop a positive self image. This is very common for all lifestyles, age groups and genders. Unfortunately fashion magazines show men and  women that are perfect when in reality they are not. Some people feel they cannot live up to these expectations and become depressed. Teenagers feel the same way when they compare themselves to others in their peer group. Unrealistic comparisons like these are dangerous to your true self image and self-esteem. They can lead to eating disorders, disruptive behavior, over sexualization and eventually drug or alcohol abuse for some people. Talking with a therapist, hypnotherapist and guidance counselor can sometimes make a person realize that they do not have to compare themselves to others. Once the self image improves they can lead happy, healthy and confident lives.

It is good to nurture your subconscious mind and have positive self care for your soul daily.
